The meaning of koans

The whole point of a koan is that it has no meaning.
We think about solving it "as though we had a red-hot ball of iron
lodged in our throat" - untill our brain spontaneously rebels -
momentarily abandons thinking - and (for a split second) reveals to us
the nature of the goal.
This I know to be true from personal experience.
